Tuwani is not only a village—it is the land where people have cared for their olive trees, planted ancient wheat grains, and grazed their flocks for generations. Altogether, it spans over 10,000 dunams.

Today, the people are forbidden from accessing most of this land. They can only walk and graze their sheep within the center of the town, where the houses are—a mere 150 dunams out of the ten thousand.

In 2000, Israelis began constructing a settlement for Israeli Jews, in defiance of international law. It is called Mazarat Ma’on. Most of the settlers are right-wing; they are violent, and their settlement now spans 1,500 dunams—land that belongs to Tuwani.

When I was there, 300 sheep had been stolen just two nights before. Only 1,700 sheep remained among the families of Tuwani. Ten years ago, villagers had around 5,000 sheep between them.

People can’t graze their flocks and are forced to buy feed that is so expensive they can’t afford to keep their sheep—or maintain their livelihoods.

And so, we travel with our partners at Maan lil Hayyat to Tuwani to express our solidarity and support. We choose to source our wool from these families, who have no other options in the face of settler violence and land theft.
