A Stole with a Story: Palestinian Tatreez for Priests + Fabrics of Palestine

We have been working on something very special, and we are happy to finally share it with you.

We now have a small collection of Palestinian priest stoles, featuring beautiful tatreez designs, as well as a keffiyeh version connected to Palestine and the wider region. There are only a limited number available, and each one is a little different.

When embroidery carries a story

For us, the most beautiful part of these stoles is the tatreez. For generations, Palestinian women have used stitches, colours and patterns to carry stories of their lives, communities and places. Flowers, trees and geometric shapes were stitched into clothing and household textiles, creating a quiet language of heritage and belonging.

We love seeing these traditional designs brought into a new setting on a priest’s stole — where the stole represents service and faith, and the embroidery carries a piece of Palestinian heritage. 

Fabrics of Palestine: The fabrics have stories too

Palestine has a long and fascinating textile history, something we wrote about in more detail in our article The Historic Textile Industry of Palestine: Weaving Culture, Resistance and Identity. When you start looking closely at Palestinian textiles, you realise just how many different traditions there are.

There is Majdalawi fabric, named after Al-Majdal, the historic Palestinian city near Gaza known for its weaving. The distinctive striped fabric is part of a textile tradition that survived displacement and continues today, including through Palestinian weavers in Syria. Read more in our blog here. 

Then there is the keffiyeh, perhaps the most recognisable Palestinian textile of all. What began as a practical piece of clothing has become deeply connected with Palestinian identity and heritage. Just like our keffiyeh stole below available exclusively on our Etsy shop. 

There is also silk from Syria, reflecting the centuries-old movement of fabrics, people and ideas across Palestine and the Levant.

And of course, wool from Tuwani in the South Hebron Hills, connecting textile making to the land itself, to sheep raising and to the rural communities who have worked with wool for generations. We use this wool for our hand-felted Christmas ornaments and nativities. 

For these communities, raising sheep and working the land is increasingly difficult. Palestinian shepherds and landowners face constant harassment and violent attacks by Israeli settlers, including damage to property and livestock, theft of sheep, and restrictions on access to grazing land. And it's getting worse.

These fabrics aren't just materials to us. They are part of the story. 

A meaningful gift

There is something wonderful about bringing Palestinian embroidery together with a garment associated with Christian ministry. Palestine is, after all, home to some of the oldest Christian communities in the world.

A priest’s stole is worn during important moments of worship and service, carrying its own tradition and meaning. With Palestinian tatreez, it carries another story too — one of heritage, culture and connection.

These stoles could make a beautiful gift for an ordination, anniversary, retirement, birthday, Christmas, or simply as a heartfelt thank-you to a priest.

Keeping the tradition moving

One of the things we love most about handmade work is that tradition doesn't have to stay in the past. A piece of Palestinian textile heritage can travel across the world and become part of someone's life. That is how traditions continue. Not just by preserving them, but by using them, wearing them, giving them, and telling their stories.
