One of the families who helped us source spices and sweets—and hand-pack every spice bag—initially refused payment for their labour and transportation. What followed was a long (and passionate) conversation. In the end, we insisted, for two simple reasons:

First, this is a Ramadan box. Its very purpose is to bless Palestinian artisans and small businesses through dignified, meaningful income. Those who poured their time and energy into creating this box deserved to be blessed as well.

Second, we cannot call ourselves a fair-trade social enterprise if we do not fairly compensate labour. While this family often volunteers with us, the work involved here was immense—and it mattered that it was honoured properly. When they finally accepted, this is what they told us:

“Thank you for blessing us with payment we never expected. But the greatest blessing was that we did this work together as a family—sitting around the table, talking, laughing, and truly enjoying one another. That was the biggest blessing of all.”
