What Is Ramadan and Why Is It Celebrated?

As the crescent moon appears, Muslims around the world welcome Ramadan — a sacred month of reflection, devotion, generosity, and community.

At Handmade Palestine, Ramadan is more than a date on the calendar. It is the glow of lanterns at dusk, the stillness before dawn, the comfort of shared meals, and the reminder that compassion and justice are daily practices.

What Is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the holiest month in Islam. It marks the revelation of the Qur’an to the Prophet Muhammad. During this month, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, refraining from food and drink throughout the day. But Ramadan is about far more than fasting.

  • Deepen spiritual connection
  • Practice self-discipline
  • Cultivate empathy for those facing hunger
  • Strengthen family and community bonds
  • Give generously and intentionally

Each evening at sunset, families gather for Iftar, the meal that breaks the fast. Homes fill, neighbours share dishes, and communities come alive. The month concludes with Eid al-Fitr, a celebration of gratitude and renewal.

At its heart, Ramadan is about transformation — becoming more mindful, compassionate, and connected.

Four Ramadan Challenges for Our Non-Muslim Friends

While Ramadan is sacred to Muslims, its spirit is universal. So, we invite our wider community to join us in four simple challenges:

  1. Practice Zakat — or Conscious Charity: Support a cause, donate to relief efforts, or choose ethical brands that uplift communities. Generosity is an act of solidarity
  2. Pray, Reflect, or Meditate Daily: Take a few quiet minutes each day to reflect on your intentions and how you can show up with greater compassion
  3. Try Fasting — Even Briefly: Skip a meal or fast for a few hours. Use the time to reflect on gratitude and hold in your heart those who face hunger daily
  4. Host an Iftar Invite Muslim friends or neighbours to break their fast at sunset: Shared meals create understanding and connection
