Solidarity with Palestine + 6 Ways To Show Our Support!
You’ve seen it. You’ve heard it. You might already be part of it.
There is a moment happening right now of solidarity with Palestinians and their struggle for justice and freedom. This should not be a passing trend; it is a central issue for all humanity and together we can create a tipping point and end decades of violent injustice.
Macklemore using his voice in support of Palestine and then being removed from Ed Sheeran’s U.S. tour is an attack on freedom of speech but it's not the real issue. In fact, thank Ed's cowardice in bowing to Zionist politics because it brought back to the front the real issue: COLONIAL VIOLENCE AGAINST PALESTINIANS.
Standing in solidarity, and being more like Macklemore, means redirecting again and again and again to Palestinians and their suffering, and to the history of brutal colonialism, settler violence, occupation and displacement that Palestinians have lived through for for almost 80 years!
More and more artists continue to support Palestine and are using their voices onstage against the ongoing suffering of Palestinians and the devastating situation in Gaza. And they should. Having a platform brings with it a responsibility to do good and be on the right side of history!
To not take a side is taking a side. Silence in complicity! The side of humanity is the one any decent human should be on. Not the side of colonialism and imperialism, power and greed and money, or the idea that one state or country can occupy another and deny its people their basic rights and freedom.
Be more Macklemore. Be more Ms. Rachel. Be more Annie Lennox. Be more Mark Ruffalo. Be more Javier Bardem. Be more Misan Harriman. Be more Susan Sarandon. Be more of all the incredible artists, actors, creators and more, who have raised their voices for Palestine.
Let’s all join this momentum and actually do something. Turn solidarity into action.
Here are 6 Ways You Can Express Your Solidarity With Palestine:
- Donate to charitable organizations. These are some of the groups working on the ground including Middle East Children’s Alliance, UNRWA, and the The Sameer Project, a grassroots organisation in Gaza.
- Wear a Keffiyeh or a keffiyeh-print item as a political statement. The keffiyeh is deeply connected to Palestinian identity and culture and has become a familiar symbol of solidarity. Don't have one? You can purchase one here. Use it to start conversations about why we call for a Free Palestine.
-
Write to your Representatives. Make your voice heard.
- Join civil disobedience events. Find actions happening around you and get involved.
- Boycott. Boycott. Boycott. You know what you need to do. Check out bdsmovement.net and download the app No Thanks.
- Buy Palestinian. Buying directly from us is one way to discover authentic Palestinian products and support the artisans and small businesses we work with. It's a simple, tangible way to support livelihoods and help create a reliable income for these incredible and talented artisans and their families.
Solidarity cannot just be something we post about. It has to be something we do, again and again, until we see real change.
