Why Palestinian Art Matters

Art in Palestine is more than creative expression—it's cultural preservation. For many artists, their work is a way to resist erasure and keep national identity alive. Whether through tatreez (traditional Palestinian embroidery), landscape painting, or poster art, these forms help tell the story of Palestine in visual, emotional ways.

One standout artist we love and admire is Heba Zagout, whose work from Gaza celebrates Palestinian women and everyday life through bold colors and symbolism. Though her art isn’t yet in our collection, her voice represents the creative resilience of Palestine. Heba was a renowned Palestinian artist and art teacher, who was brutally killed with her two children in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza in October 2023. Her targeting marked a horrific act of violence against a powerful creative voice who used her art to speak out against oppression and occupation.

An artist that does feature in our collection is the incredible work by Nabil Anani who connects modern techniques with tradition. His use of tatreez embroidery patterns and motifs mirrors the themes we celebrate in our beautiful and broad tatreez collection, with highlights in the next section below, blending art with cultural memory.
