The beautiful craft of Tatreez, is a Palestinian embroidery, and traditionally, it’s been passed down in the simplest way: by sitting close to the women who stitch. Palestinian mamas, aunties, and their sittis (our grandmas). The kids would play nearby while the women sewed, talked, and shared stories. And somewhere along the way, the children learned, too.

Nobody called it a lesson. It was just part of being together. But for many Palestinian families, that tradition isn’t always easy to pass down.

For those in the diaspora, displacement may mean living far from the aunties and sittis who would once have taught their children to stitch. For others, the devastating realities facing Palestine have separated families or taken loved ones away. Even for families still living in Palestine, finding the time and space to pass these traditions on isn’t always easy.

That’s why we wanted to create something that brings this tradition into more homes, connecting Palestinian children with their heritage while inviting children and families from all backgrounds to discover the beauty of tatreez. Something you can share around the kitchen table, learning together, one stitch and one story at a time.

Meet the Zai’ Sitti Tatreez Kit, created in collaboration with Rand Dabboor. It’s designed for complete beginners, for kids and grown-ups alike. No experience needed, just a little curiosity and a willingness to give it a go.

• 4 squares of itameen (Aida fabric)
• 5 coloured threads
• 2 cross-stitch needles
• 1 instruction card
• 4 tatreez motif cards
• 1 sticker
• 1 wooden frame

We keep imagining a child sitting at the kitchen table, thread in hand, asking what their pattern means and someone sitting beside them, telling them a little story about where it comes from.

That’s what tatreez is about. It’s not just the stitches. It’s the stories, the memories, and the connection we carry with us.
