Recipe for Tasty Erk Sous Licorice Drink

A tasty drink is always a plus, and erk sous is the perfect choice to quench your thirst. The erk sous, or licorice, drink is usually enjoyed during Ramadan for its sweet and slightly bitter taste. Made from licorice root, its aromatic and delicious properties are a wonderful way to satisfy almost anyone on a hot day.

This drink is enjoyed around the region, and has a deep history to compliments its popularity. In fact, the medicinal use of licorice to treat digestive issues can be traced all the way back to ancient Babylon. Even now, this drink has nutritional properties, with its high mineral concentration to help boost immune systems!

Today, street vendors sell erk sous on hot days with their ice-filled containers of the drink. It’s a wonderful way to cool off and enjoy the unique flavor of licorice!

So why not enjoy some homemade erk sous for yourself?

To start, you’ll need:

  • 1/4 cup of licorice / sous
  • 1 gallon water
  • Sugar to taste

Instructions:

  1. If you like the flavor strong, soak your licorice in the water overnight.
  2. Boil the licorice in the water for 5 minutes
  3. Add sugar to your taste
  4. Strain and enjoy cold!
