5 Symbols of Palestinian Resistance and Liberation
Palestinian culture is rich with symbols of resilience, hope, and freedom. These symbols, deeply woven into our art, traditions, and everyday life, carry stories of resistance and liberation. Let’s take a closer look at five iconic symbols that hold a special place in our hearts—and in our art poster collection at Handmade Palestine.
The Watermelon
Who knew a fruit could be so powerful? During the 1970s, Palestinian colors were banned by the Israeli occupation. The military entered an art gallery and confiscated paintings with the flag. They turned to the Palestinians and said, If we see the colors, even if you paint a watermelon, we will confiscate it. It is forbidden! So Palestinian artists began painting watermelons—red, green, black, and white—to defy the ban. It’s become a sweet but striking reminder of creative resistance.
The Cactus (Sabra)
The cactus thrives in harsh conditions, much like Palestinians enduring decades of displacement. Found scattered across the ruins of villages destroyed in 1948, they were traditionally used as a sort of fence at the edges of property. These hardy plants have become living witnesses of loss and survival.
The Dove
A universal symbol of peace, the dove carries special meaning in Palestinian culture. Often depicted with an olive branch, it represents hope for freedom and peace in a land that has seen so much struggle.
The Thob
The thob, or traditional Palestinian dress, is more than clothing—it’s a canvas of history. Each stitch tells a story of a village, a family, and a culture that refuses to fade.
The Keffiyeh
This checkered scarf has become a global icon of resistance and solidarity. Originally worn by farmers to protect from the elements, it became a political symbol of freedom during the 1936 Revolt when peasants drew the fabric over their faces as they fought against British colonizers. Today the keffiyeh is a symbol of Palestinian identity and unity, proudly draped across shoulders in protests worldwide.
