Original Keffiyeh Zeity Style
Black thread on green fabric.
This traditional keffiyeh is made by the Hirbawi Shop in Hebron, Palestine, which opened its doors in 1961 and is the last remaining producer of keffiyehs in the entire country. Even so it only works part time as the demand has greatly lessened for the high quality craftsmanship of these scarves. People prefer to buy the cheaper made in China reproductions.
The keffiyeh has become an important symbol of Palestinian resistance. In the 30s it was worn, and embraced as an image, by the armed guerillas who prosecuted armed rebellion against the British occupiers of Palestine. Until that period, the keffiyeh had primarily marked its wearer as rural, as a peasant, fallah, or a Bedouin.
Handmade in Palestine supports local artistans in Palestine, while also donating all profits from sales to to the not-for-profit Mashjar Juthour, and eco project that plants trees and protects Palestine's natural heritage. To learn more about Mashjar Juthour, visit the website at juthour.org
*Please note that because the factory rarely repeats the exact same patterns. Some variations occur in linens or patterns. Also please note that sometimes threads are snagged on the antique machines. We do our best to select perfect keffiyehs, but frankly you are buying a beautiful keffiyeh made on ancient machinery and should expect some character!
