Easy Carob Juice Recipe for Ramadan
During Ramadan, you'll see kids on the sides of the street selling liter bottles of homemade carob juice. While it's more of a brew than a juice, that is the translation from Arabic and so it's what we tend to call it.
Carob juice is a cool, refreshing, plant-based treat that will bring a smile to almost anyone’s face. It's super sweet on its own, so while we put below the typically added sugar as an ingredient, we like it without!
Usually enjoyed during Iftar in the month of Ramadan, this drink that is compared to chocolate helps to refresh and nourish you! Carob is known to have an abundance of health benefits since its packed with antioxidants, fiber, and even calcium.
Carob (or kharoub in Arabic) trees naturally grow in Palestine, and have become a popular source of nutrition for breakfast, snacks and desserts around the world It can be used as a substitute for cocoa, so it can be used in many different ways! In Palestine, we still mostly just use it in the traditional drink.
We would love to show you how to make your very own carob juice from scratch!
To start, you’ll need:
- 2 cups of crushed carob
- 1 cup brown sugar (optional)
- 4 cups water
- Place the crushed carob in a pot with water and simmer for approximately 45 minutes until carobs are tender.
- Remove from heat. Take out the carob pods, leaving the water in the pot. Gently break up the carob pods.
- Add the sugar and carob back to the water and simmer for 45 additional minutes.
- Strain, cool, and enjoy!
It lasts in the fridge for a few days to weeks, depending on the amount of sugar you used. If you have small kids drinking, consider diluting with water.
