Artisan Highlights: Straps by Sarab
At Handmade Palestine, we are proud to support artisans like Sarab, the designer behind the Straps by Sarab collection. Her work highlights Palestinian craftsmanship and the determination needed to create beauty despite many challenges.
Here we take a closer look at the making of her red cashmere bag straps and Keffiyeh-inspired designs, which reflect both her skill and resilience.
Step 1: Sourcing Materials
The process begins in Ramallah, where Sarab carefully selects the red cashmere fabric from a fabric store. It is this fabric that forms the foundation of many of her iconic straps. However, sourcing this material is often unpredictable, with varying shades and textures making it challenging to find the right fabric.
The hardware for the straps—buckles, hooks, and other essential parts—comes from Israeli suppliers, requiring someone to navigate military checkpoints to bring them into Palestine. Delays in obtaining these supplies are common, and even when they arrive, the quality and specifications can vary. Sarab works with whatever she can get, always focused on producing something unique and high-quality.
Step 2: Bringing the Design to Life
Once the materials are sourced, Sarah heads to the Al Amari Women's Refugee Camp, where incredibly skilled women artisans help to bring Sarab’s designs to life. These women, many of whom have lived in the camp for years, cut, sew, and assemble each strap by hand, consistently producing exceptional work.
Step 3: Overcoming Challenges
The creation of each strap is shaped by the difficulties Sarab and the artisans face, from supply delays to the changing availability of fabric and hardware. Yet Sarab’s ability to turn these challenges into opportunities for creative expression is evident in every piece. Each strap is a symbol of both artistry and resilience.
Step 4: A Symbol of Resistance
The finished straps, whether crafted from bold red cashmere or designed with Keffiyeh patterns, are more than accessories. They represent the perseverance of Palestinian artisans, especially the women of Amari, who continue to create despite the extreme challenges they face.
When you purchase a Strap by Sarab, you are not just buying a handmade product; you are supporting the livelihoods of these artisans and helping them sustain their craft. Your purchase contributes to their ability to provide for their families and preserve their cultural heritage.
